2019 BRAND START

It was started by two designers: the son of the founder of American denim brand True Religion, and his grandfather a famous American artist.

Later, the latter left the group, and a friend from his fashion school days, who was working as a designer at Ralph Lauren, joined the brand, where he remains to this day.

Samuel Zelig is inspired by American sportswear and workwear from the 1930s to 1950s, and is committed to redefining the meaning of workwear for a modern audience by faithfully following the traditions and details found in the clothing of that time while designing using modern sewing and dyeing techniques.

The two designers, who have a deep knowledge of vintage clothing, envision a "Dream Vintage" (a dream-like vintage piece that does not exist, but would be worth immeasurable if it did), and design items based on that vision.

All designs, from patchwork to embroidery, are original by the designer. He pays homage to various elements of old America, such as culture and art, and creates illustrations that add his own unique interpretation.

At Samuel, we develop multiple themes for each season.

・Antique
・Hotel

In their imagination, they value combining elements that at first glance seem unrelated, but which, despite their strange contrasts, harmonize beautifully.
A perfect example of this is an antique shop, where various items filled with people's memories and past lives are lined up, newly discovered and collected by people unknown to their owners. Each item has a different personality, yet they exist naturally in the same space.

In "ANTIQUE," we have carefully selected some of our favorite antiques and expressed them as illustrations and embroidery. While sharing a unified color scheme, each object has its own unique personality.

Additionally, to add another focal point and cohesion to the collection, the garments have been auto-repaired by machine, giving them a more "worn-in" appearance. The repairs are tonal stitched patches in organic shapes, as seen on vintage workwear, and are placed along the lines of the garment's natural wear and tear over time.

Film plays an important role in the designer's design process.
For this series called "Hotel" I was inspired by some of my favorite movies: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut.
These films all feature very interesting decorative interiors and beautifully composed scenes.

Additionally, we were inspired by the lives of the artists who lived in the hotel.
The legendary HOTEL CHELSEA is famously home to many artists including Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. We felt that by incorporating interesting elements such as locks, "keep out" signs, a signed guest log and architectural drawings of the hotel structure, we could create our own unique hotel.

The fictional hotel's name, St. Denis, comes from the building where we first had our studio, a great Los Angeles landmark built in the 1930s. The group features hotel-themed embroidery featuring characters and objects found in the St. Denis Hotel.
